YSU Women’s Bowling rolling way to early success

Last year… Youngstown State didn’t HAVE a women’s Bowling team… But after months of recruiting… the Penguins have a built a program from the ground up… and have turned some heads during their FIRST year of competition… Josh Frketic has more with this YOUNG team… and their EARLY success. ALEXIS GRIM “WHEN COACH SAID ‘HEY WE ARE RANKED’ I WAS LIKE WHAT? NO WAY?! THAT IS AWESOME!” JOSH FREKTIC – THAT MIGHT BE A BIT OF AN UNDERSTATEMENT. IN THEIR FIRST YEAR OF EXISTENCE—THE YOUNGSTOWN STATE WOMEN’S BOWLING TEAM HAS DONE SOMETHING NO OTHER FIRST YEAR PROGRAM HAS THIS YEAR—CRACK THE TOP 25 IN A NATIONAL POLL. IN THE PROCESS, EARNING THE RESPECT OF SEASONED PROGRAMS—ALL WITH SEVEN FRESHMAN AND ONE SOPHOMORE MAKING UP THE SQUAD. COACH GILLIAM – “I DO NOT THINK THEY TOOK US TOO SERIOUS. THEY WERE LIKE AH WELL WE WILL JUST BEAT THEM AND MOVE ON BUT NOW, I THINK THEY SEE WE ARE HERE AND WANT TO WIN TOO.” GRIM – “I THINK THE FIRST TIME WE BEAT SAM HOUSTON WAS THAT FIRST MOMENT WHERE LIKE, WOW WE CAN COMPETE WITH SOMEONE WHO IS SO HIGH IN THE RANKINGS AND HAS SO MUCH EXPERIENCE.” RACHEL DARROW – “WE WERE LIKE, K, WE CAN DO THIS. WE ARE NOT JUST THESE LITTLE FRESHMAN COMING IN TRYING TO BE WITH THE BIG DAWGS. WE CAN ACTUALLY HOLD OUR OWN.” FRKETIC – SAM HOUSTON STATE HAS BEEN TO THE NCAA WOMEN’S BOWLING TOURNAMENT THE LAST FOUR YEARS—AND WON IT ALL BACK IN 2014. THAT IS JUST ONE OF SEVERAL RANKED TEAMS THE PENGUINS HAVE KNOCKED OFF THIS GROUNDBREAKING SEASON. DARROW – “WE HAVE WORKED SO HARD FOR IT. TO JUST SEE ALL OF OUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND ALL OF OUR FOUR HOUR PRACTICES HAVE LED TO THIS.” GRIM – “I THINK IT IS AMAZING. I DON’T KNOW, I DO NOT THINK MANY PEOPLE CAN SAY THEY WERE A PART OF A FIRST YEAR PROGRAM, AND LIKE, YOU ARE THE FIRST PEOPLE THAT ARE ACTUALLY ON IT AND EXPERIENCING THAT FOR THIS COLLEGE SO I THINK THAT IS EXCITING.” FRKETIC – JUST TWO MORE TOURNAMENT REMAIN FOR THE PENGUINS THIS SEASON BEFORE THE NATIONAL TOURNAMENT. ONLY 8 TEAMS QUALIFY OF THE OVER 70 PROGRAMS NATIONALLY. A TOURNEY BID MAY NOT COME THIS YEAR FOR YSU—BUT THE TEAM BELIEVES ONE COULD BE IN THE NEAR FUTURE FOR THIS BUDDING PROGRAM. DARROW – “OH IT IS NOT OUT OF THE QUESTION WHATSOEVER. NO. WE ARE STILL SAYING WHEN WE GO TO NATIONALS. THERE IS NO IF AT THIS POINT, JUST A WHEN.” JOSH FRKETIC SPORTS TEAM 27 And finally, speaking of Penguins… Here’s a look at
