The ICC confers various awards the world’s best cricket players. Ben Stokes from England, won the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy which is given to the best player of the world in a year. Indian player Rohit Sharma won the ODI Cricketer of the year award. Pat Cummins from Australia, won Test Cricketer of the Year award. However our very own Virat Kohli has won 3 awards! He has won the award for Best ODI Captain and Best Test Captain as well. He was given a third award as well. Let me tell you about it. The third award is called ‘Spirit of Cricket Award’ This award is given to the person who despite competition in a match is kind & respectful. If the person is well mannered with the umpire, team mates and everyone else, they are bestowed with this award. When Virat Kohli was granted this award, he was extremely surprised. Kohli said for years he has had a bad temper, he has been disrespectful and has done many wrong things. This is why he is surprised to receive this award. Virat Kohli said that, in 2012, India and Australia played against each other. During the match, which was held in Australia, the Australian audience started heckling the Indian team. Virat Kohli in his anger showed them the middle finger. For flipping off the crowd, he was then fined 50 percent of his match fees by the ICC. Virat Kohli accused Australian Bowler Steve Smith of Ball tampering. Smith was then found guilty and given a 1 year suspension from cricket. After completing his one year suspension, he played the Australia vs India World Cup match. While steve smith was batting, Kohli was fielding. The crowd then started heckling smith for returning to cricket. Smith was extremely hurt. Virat Kohli then turned to the crowd and told them to stop. Due to Kohli’s sportsmanship, he was given the award. Kohli said during a match, intimidate team mates of the opposition is completely fine. When the opposition loses they become disheartened but that’s normal. However Kohli said, when the crowd heckles like that, it breaks the morale of the player.
