How to Train an Italian Setter : How to Train an Italian Setter to Lay Down

Hi! I’m Melanie McLeroy with Taurus Training
for Expert Village, and we’re going to work with a Bracco Italiano also known as an Italian
setter. We’re moving on to teach this Bracco Italiano how to lie down. Now, it’s easy
to teach a dog to lie down with food—and if food works for your dog, then please check
out a different breeds video—but this particular dog responds better to a squeaky toy. Now
teaching a dog to lie down with a squeaky toy can have its challenges. So let’s see
how she does. Sit, good, notice I’m still using some body language, I’m going to do
the same thing with the down. I’ll see if she will follow the hedgehog down. Now I’m
tempted to squeak it, but I’m afraid, that I’ll get her too aroused and excited. So…
ump, see, sit, so that tells me not to use the squeak, I tried it there because she wasn’t
getting it. So what I’m going to do is switch to my cheese, good, I marked that, because
she made nice eye contact. Oh! Yeah, you’re trying to figure this out, huh, sit, good.
I don’t do this very often, but I’m going to use a little physical manipulation with
this dog to teach her what I want her to do. I much prefer that dogs learn to do things
on their own; that is why I like to use food as a lure so often. I’m going to grab my
reward and try hand signal and a lot of body language, down, she’s thinking about it,
not sure what I mean, down, good, okay, good girl. Let’s try that again, down, good,
excellent, okay, outstanding, sit. Now I’m still using a lot of body language here, down,
try it again, sit, down, little help, good, okay. So sometimes just a little bit of help
will teach your dog what you want them to do, and then you can reward. I bet this dog
is popping right into a down, very speedily, very soon.
