Dr. Amy Gearlds Discusses Occupational Medicine

My name is Amy Gearlds and I’m a physician
in the Family and Occupational Medicine departments of Graves Gilbert Clinic. Occupational Medicine includes maintenance
of health care in the work place. This includes preventing and treating injuries
and diseases which occur in the work place. Here at OHP we partner with local industries
to provide care for their employees and sometimes even their families. This can start from pre-employment screenings
all the way to when an employee leaves a company or retires from a company. So most often we’re taking care of doing pre-employment
physicals as well as yearly exams, just looking at overall maintenance of health care such
as hearing and vision, also respiratory clearance as well as following pulmonary function throughout
someone’s work care. We also do drug screens. Some of the most common injuries we see from
work care are going to be more musculoskeletal in nature, although it can be repetitive in
nature including carpal tunnel and different issues along those lines. One of the services that we offer at GGC OHP
Work Care is physical demands testing. This is unique to us here at GGC. This allows physical testing to test a patient’s
ability to perform a specific task and to see how much they can endure during a day-to-day
job. We also do a lot of audiometry. We can get a baseline audiometry and compare
ityear-to-year just to see how someone’s hearing is changing throughout their employment. We also do pulmonary function testing. Employers need these services so that they
can find employees who are capable of doing any jobs that they need them to do. This helps them be more compliant with any
OSHA compliant issues, also helps them when it comes to reporting work related injuries,
which are required through OSHA. Some of the most common issues we seem to
see here are patients who aren’t aware of underlying conditions such as high blood pressure,
vision issues, pulmonary issues, and we like to find those patients and get them to the
appropriate care takers to get those issues treated. When patients come in for their first visit,
they should be anticipating having various screening tests performed. They should also expect a physical exam from
a provider, possibly drug screens depending
upon what is going to be required by their employer. Graves Gilbert OHP Work Care has a great advantage
being involved with the larger GGC community. We have many many specialists within the network
and we are able to refer as needed within that community, we’re also able to share information
as needed, which is a great benefit to employers and employees alike. Well I very much like to help people and I
think my heart is trying to solve problems. I enjoy talking to patients, figuring out
what’s going on with them, then trying to solve their problem and make them happier
and healthier in the process.
